Do You Live to Write or Write to Live?

The best authors are the ones who absolutely positively have to write their story. There is something compelling them, captivating them, and fueling their curiosity and their creativity. Are you one of those authors? How do you know for sure?

It’s easy. Imagine walking away from your story idea, no matter how fledgling or uncertain it seems. Just stop writing it. Do you feel relieved, or do you feel panicky? If you feel relieved, it doesn’t necessarily mean that you aren’t meant to be a great writer. It may just mean that there’s a different story that will fuel your passion and purpose. During Week 1 of Phase 1 of LAUNCH Your Story, the premier program for fiction authors here at The Write Stuff, we helped our writers find their inspiration and develop the story they are going to stick with. If you are struggling, Phase 1 is a great place to start.

If you imagined walking away from your story and immediately felt stressed, panicked, heart beating, stomach churning then I’ve got news for you:

You’re an author. You are meant to write that story. Don’t give up. Don’t give in. Just give it what you can.

What is the difference between an author and a struggling author? It’s not complicated. It’s a daily writing habit. The single most important thing any writer can do if they want to be successful, is make a commitment to their story. Write every day if at all possible. Write for five, ten, fifteen minutes a day if that’s all you’ve got.

But writing takes a village. You’re going to need other people throughout your process no matter how determined and dogged you are. You’ll need resources for feedback and research to validate your story elements. You’ll need beta-readers, proofers and editors and you need a loving, supportive tribe to nurture and encourage your talents.

As determined as you may be, there will be days you don’t feel like writing. When that happens, turn to The Write Stuff. Members in all our programs are automatically entered in The Story Stratosphere, our private community (Phases 2-7 of LAUNCH, plus LIFT-OFF and LANDING). They get advice, a shoulder to cry on, and a team that won’t let them give up on their dreams. We also host monthly events including WORDfrenzy, where we help authors quickly catch up on their wordcount goals.

Writers create stories for many reasons. They write to fulfil their own dreams and ambitions. They write out of insatiable curiosity to understand the human experience. They write to please the people they love, and they write in hopes of more people loving and respecting them. What are your reasons? What is your story? What do you need to make that story come to life?
